Important M & O Levy in February by Pat Whipple

     If you compare the amount of  Maintenance and Operation (M & O) levy money other schools collect, you suddenly realize a surprising discrepancy.  Sprague can run a levy at $3.12 per $1,000 and only collect approximately $295,000.  Odessa is running an M & O levy at $2.95 per $1,000 and will collect approximately $698,000.  Harrington set their last levy at $4.06 and collected approximately $540,000.  Our tax base is smaller so we collect a smaller amount.  
     We have to be very fiscal conservative to maintain our school buildings.  The state simply does not adequately fund public schools.  Our levy is approximately 14.5 % of the school district’s total budget.  We have an aging roof over the elementary that will need to be replaced very soon.  The cost could be approximately $40,000 depending on how much of the elementary roof we replace.  When we replaced the water system in the elementary a few years ago the cost was approximately $70,000.  We had to plan ahead and budget the money over the course of time.  We did this without increasing the M & O levies.  We currently have two freezers that have been repaired many times, one in the kitchen and the other is the walk-in freezer.  The last time the repairman came out he informed us that the freezers will soon need to be replaced.  The freezer in the kitchen would cost approximately $6,500.  These are just a few examples of some of the extra cost we will be faced within the future.  Our M & O levy money is a very important part of keeping things running.
