If your child is already enrolled in Sprague School District, please discuss your specific concerns with your child’s teacher. You may provide a written request to refer your child for a special education evaluation. Here is a sample form to assist you in submitting a written referral. Special Education Evaluation Process
Referral: Student is referred by a parent or teacher or during a district wide screening event
Consent to Evaluate: The district has 25 days to decide whether or not to evaluate a student. Parent and teacher input is very important to make the best decision. Parents must give written consent to continue. Once consent is received, a series of timelines is set into motion.
Initial Evaluation: After signed consent is received, the district has 35 school days to complete an evaluation. This comprehensive evaluation must address all areas of a suspected disability. Parents, teachers, a speech therapist, occupational therapist, special education teacher, school psychologist and doctor may all be part of the evaluation team. Learn more about the evaluation process on the OSPI website.
Individualized Education Plan: If the student qualifies for special education services, the family will be invited to help develop the Individualized Education Program (IEP).
Services: Once the IEP is written and approved by the team, it will take effect. Services may happen in the general education classroom or in the resource room.
Progress Reports: Each quarter, parents will receive a written report about their child’s progress.
Review: Each year, the IEP team will meet to review the progress toward goals and create new goals.
Reevaluation: Every 3 years, the student will have a complete evaluation to determine if they continue to qualify for special education services.
